Day of Reason doesn't have a prayer of working

The National Day of Reason created by the American Humanist Association as an alternative to the president’s endorsed National Day of Prayer is well-meaning, but will have no impact, or at worst, a negative impact.

If secular humanists want to keep the country from becoming a reactionary theocracy, the way to do it is not to outright piss off people of faith, who make up most of America. Instead, it must create dialogue and understanding.

“Reason” as an alternative to “prayer” is a dubious choice. The organizers should have chosen something like a National Day of Hope – a secular alternative that still emphasizes the good qualities of prayer and de-emphasizes its religious and supernatural meaning.

Only by working with the faithful, not against them, can we turn the country away from its current path toward the elimination of the separation of church and state.
